Professional Background
Matt Murphy has built an impressive career in the financial planning industry, spanning over 25 years. His journey began in audit within the commodity futures industry, after which he transitioned to portfolio management support with a leading municipal bond asset management firm in Chicago. With a passion for comprehensive financial planning, Matt went on to establish his own boutique Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firm, where he provided expert guidance to clients for over 18 years.
Throughout his career, Matt has been a committed advocate for the financial planning profession, giving back in numerous ways. He served as Commissioner to the CFP Board's Disciplinary and Ethics Commission (DEC) from 2010 to 2014, and was appointed Chairman of the DEC in 2014. Matt also served as a Commissioner on the Special Commission on Standards for CFP Board from 2015 to 2018, playing a pivotal role in revising and updating the CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. His contributions were instrumental in codifying the fiduciary requirement for all CFP® professionals. Matt's expertise and leadership were once again called upon by the CFP® Board, which asked him to return to the DEC from 2020 to 2022 to provide special advice and counsel for the recently expanded DEC. He is also a past Board Member of the Phoenix Chapter of the Financial Planning Association and has served on numerous committees with NAPFA, demonstrating his commitment to the advancement of the profession.
Matt Murphy earned his Bachelor's degree in Finance with Honors from Illinois State University and completed DePaul University’s CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ program.
Personal Pursuits
Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters and all of their sporting and extracurricular activities. Matt’s youngest daughter is a Wish Kid® and Matt actively supports Make-a-Wish® and his daughter’s involvement with them. Matt was previously a full-time bicycle racer, competing in over 500 professional and amateur races and was honored to be selected to train at the Olympic Training Center as part of the US Olympic development program. Matt still competes in his lifelong sport but sticks to Masters’ categories (both road and mountain bike). He also gives back to cycling by supporting a local junior racing program. With his lifelong passion for cycling and you may find Matt out on the roads or the trails when not advising clients.
Community Impact
As a pro bono financial advisor, Matt has contributed his expertise to the Homes for Heroes program, assisting disabled veterans with financial planning and investment management. In addition to this, he is an ardent supporter of Ryan House, a non-profit organization that provides respite care and end-of-life care to children with life-limiting medical conditions and their families. Matt also volunteers his time and resources to Make-A-Wish® Arizona, an organization that grants wishes to children facing critical illnesses. His philanthropic endeavors demonstrate his deep commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others, and he is proud to be associated with these worthy causes.
