On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Mission Wealth’s Co-Founder, Seth Streeter, hosted our 10th INSPIREDtalk, a transformative session with Mara Abrams, Founder and CEO of Numara Impact. This webinar delved beyond traditional philanthropy, offering innovative insights and practical steps to create a meaningful impact strategy. In this article, we summarize the key points and top takeaways from this enlightening talk.

Mission Wealth’s purpose is to empower people to realize true wealth, which encompasses more than just financial optimization but living a fulfilled life. Seth kicked off the one-hour webinar by introducing the 12 Dimensions of Life™, with the focus of this talk being the impact dimension. The goal was to explore ways to make a greater difference in the areas that matter most to us.

Interactive INSPIREDtalks

Participants were asked to share the causes they are passionate about, revealing a diverse range of interests from climate change and animal welfare to homelessness and food security. This set the stage for an engaging and interactive session.

After Mara shared her insights about amplifying impact, attendees were split into breakout groups to discuss two key questions:

  • What causes stir your heart?
  • What’s one new way you can apply your strengths to that cause?

10 Strategies for Amplifying Your IMPACT

1. Define What Excites You
Identify what lights you up and align your giving strategies with your values and passions. This alignment ensures sustained motivation and effectiveness.

2. Involve Family and Personal Networks
Engage your family and personal networks in your impact efforts. Multi-generational giving and collaboration can bring diverse perspectives and greater impact.

3. Identify Leverage Points
Look for leverage points within complex systems where small changes can lead to significant impacts. Use systems thinking to understand the larger dynamics at play.

4. Leverage Personal and Business Strengths
Use your personal and business strengths to support impactful causes. For example, Nike’s expertise in branding and storytelling was used to change societal perceptions and support girls in poverty.

5. Innovate Funding Models
Consider innovative funding models like giving circles, impact investing, or social enterprises. Combining philanthropy with investment can maximize the impact of your resources.

6. Strengthen Existing Organizations
Lend your leadership and vision to existing organizations rather than starting from scratch. Strengthen and support their efforts to amplify your impact.

7. Engage the Local Community
Understand the needs and dynamics of the communities you aim to help. Engage local leaders and innovators to ensure culturally relevant and sustainable solutions.

Consider going on a listening and learning tour vs. “voluntourism”.

8. Build Bridges Across Sectors
Create partnerships across different sectors and disciplines. Diverse perspectives can lead to richer and more effective solutions.

9. Harness the Power of Storytelling
Use storytelling to convey your message and engage your audience. Effective storytelling can amplify your cause and attract support.

Mara is the Founder and CEO of Numara Impact, a social impact studio that brings creativity and innovation to some of the world’s biggest challenges.

Mara is a social innovation and civic engagement leader, with a career that has spanned government, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. She weaves networks, connecting people across disciplines to solve complex global and national challenges.

Most recently she served as Director of Impact Partnerships for Unfinished, a philanthropic group dedicated to a more ethical, equitable digital future. She also co-founded the U.S. Census Bureau’s first innovation lab, Census Open Innovation Labs, where she focused on creating modern and culturally relevant approaches to reaching hard-to-count communities for the 2020 Census, as well as working with the private sector to develop digital tools for the public good.

Previously, she led innovation partnerships for the Nike Foundation, co-founded an incubator in Cuba, and worked with citizen journalists in war zones to help them tell their stories to a global audience.
