Mission Wealth Announces Fall 2023 Scholarship Recipients

Mission Wealth and the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning are proud to announce the recipients of the Fall 2023 Mission Wealth Scholars, a scholarship program that aims to advance the financial planning profession by providing financial assistance to individuals pursuing CFP® certification who are from populations underrepresented in the profession. This is the second cohort of professionals for the Mission Wealth Scholars Program.

“Attracting and supporting diverse talent is an important and ongoing evolution for the financial services industry. It brings expanded perspectives to serve a wider client base and it fosters innovation. Our team at Mission Wealth is happy to support our recent Scholars cohort group with both financial support and mentorship to provide them with career advancement opportunities.” Said Seth Streeter, Mission Wealth Co-Founder and Chief Impact Officer.

About the Mission Wealth Scholars Program

Mission Wealth has partnered with the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning to offer this scholarship, aiming to create a more diverse and sustainable financial planning profession. We’re on a mission to inspire people, optimize their finances, and achieve their life goals. We celebrate varied perspectives and backgrounds, knowing this inclusivity is a strength that sparks creativity and innovation.

The scholarship awards up to $5,000 per student seeking to complete an undergraduate-level or a certificate-level CFP Board-Registered program, qualifying them to sit for the CFP® exam.

Meet the Fall 2023 Scholarship Recipients

Mission Wealth is proud to announce the second cohort of the Mission Wealth Scholars scholarship program: Jonathan Boyack, Jen Brown, Praveen Krishnamurthy, and BoiAn Nguyen-Sanh.

Jonathan Boyack – Huntington Beach, CA Jonathan Boyack

Jonathan is currently an Investment Analyst at an RIA firm in Salt Lake City, UT. As an approaching Finance graduate of Brigham Young University, Jonathan is the Vice President of the Private Banking and Wealth Management Association at the school and has been awarded many honors including the Marriott School Dean’s List. He plans to take the CFP® exam in July 2024.

Mission Wealth is proud to support these unique and multifaceted professionals in their CFP journeys. Here are some facts we learned about Jonathan that we thought connected “the applicant” to the purpose of our Mission Wealth Scholars Program and our internal culture of fostering a caring, growth-minded, committed, and adaptable workforce:

“Luckily, I was able to witness my parents’ commitment to financial prudence as I grew up. Their example instilled in me the importance of saving for the future, living within one’s means, and appreciating the value of money earned through diligence. In certain ways, I aim to maintain these values in my approach to money. I still hold the lessons of fiscal responsibility close to my heart, recognizing the importance of saving for the future and being mindful. My upbringing has also reinforced the idea that money is a tool, a means to attain life’s goals and security, rather than an end in itself. I strive to use money as a tool to create financial stability, to pursue my passions and aspirations, and to provide for my family’s needs.” says Jonathan.

Jen Brown – Austin, TX Jen Brown

Over the past 13 years, Jen has worked her way up from cashier to global team leader for a major retail grocery giant and has decided to take a leap of faith into a career transition. Since hiring her own financial planner, another women CFP® professional, Jen learned how transformative realigning her relationship to finances could be. In Jen’s own words, “It became apparent to me that I too had a story to share, much like my mother, that might help others as well as continue to remind me of what I’d done and how far I had come.”

Here are fun facts we learned about Jen:

A creative soul, Jen finds joy in hand knitting, gardening, and fiction writing. Her journey began with a book she wrote in third grade, a testament to her lifelong love for storytelling.  Volunteering as a writing mentor and co-editor for a local fiction journal, she continues to nurture her creative talents and honors the responsibility of being asked by fellow creatives to critique and leave feedback for their work.

Praveen Krishnamurthy – Sunnyvale, CA Praveen Krishnamurthy

Praveen is an ex-software engineer turned fee-only financial advisor and holds a Series 65 as a licensed solo registered investment advisor. His philosophy on money stems from his upbringing in India: 1. Money is an important tool that can be used in many ways, and 2. It is also a limited resource, so choose wisely when spending it. Years of disciplined savings have allowed Praveen to transition from tech to finance, and he’s ready to continue his financial expertise as a CFP® professional.

Here are fun facts we learned about Praveen:

A tech enthusiast, Praveen enjoys creating financial spreadsheets and calculators. His adventurous spirit is evident in his love for the outdoors, having completed a solo motorcycle tour of the Himalayas and a hike up Half Dome in Yosemite. His next challenge is trekking to the Mount Everest base camp.

BoiAn Nguyen-Sanh – Elk Grove, CA BoiAn Nguyen-Sanh

BoiAn, a third-year honors finance student at Sacramento State University, aspires to bring openness to financial discussions. On the topic of her money philosophy, she wrote, “As a future financial professional, I wish to foster an open approach to my clients’ relationships with money. In my culture, money is a sensitive subject, but I don’t think it should be. Building a strong financial future requires you to be honest with yourself about where you are, compare that to where you want to be, and evaluate how to bridge that gap.”

Here are fun facts we learned about BoiAn:

Outside of the classroom and the workplace, BoiAn enjoys developing her creative skills, particularly through baking, playing the piano, and practicing graphic design. Through these hobbies, she’s realized that creativity can be expressed in many ways.

Having these outlets for creative expression has helped her navigate stressful times and has taught her the value of practice and persistence in personal development. BoiAn explains, “Whether I’m trying to perfect my macarons, master a challenging passage of the Interstellar theme song, or trying to create the perfect design for a spread of my youth group’s yearbook, I have learned that there is, in fact, no “perfect” when it comes to art, or life in general. As long as I continue to give effort and diligence into my endeavors, I will continue to develop and improve in all areas of my life.”
