Hi, I’m Scott Randy, wealth adviser with Mission Wealth. Over the years, I’ve seen that money rarely divides families because of the dollars themselves. It’s usually the emotions, perceptions, and comparisons that come with them. Today, I want to share how understanding a few behavioral tendencies can help your family preserve not just wealth but, more importantly, relationships. Let’s start with what I call the fairness trap. The idea that equal means fair. While this sounds good in practice, the truth is equal doesn’t always mean fair. One child may have greater financial need depending on family or life circumstances, while another may be supporting a close relative. What matters most is communicating your intentions behind your decisions. Simple steps, such as a family meeting or a heartfelt legacy letter, can help reduce resentment and clarify how you’d like to see your wealth impact your family members’ lives. Another common challenge is social comparison. When siblings evaluate what they receive relative to each other, instead of appreciating the overall value of the gift. That’s why I encourage clients to discuss inheritances from a sense of purpose, not percentages. Think about framing gifts to support education, seed capital for a business, or charitable gifts that reflect your family’s values. And it never hurts to remind family members that inheritance is a gift. not an entitled. Parents often assume their kids will just get along after they’re gone. But money can quickly change those relationship dynamics. That’s why I use financial planning tools to model various scenarios and suggest periodic family meetings to revisit perceptions as life evolves. And for heirs, inherited wealth can feel like found money. So, we often design staggered trusts or education-based disbursements to encourage thoughtful long-term decision-making. At Mission Wealth, our goal is to help families turn wealth into well-being across generations. If you’d like to align your estate plan with your family’s values and avoid some of these common pitfalls, let’s start that conversation.
In this short video, Mission Wealth Wealth Advisor Scott Ranby explains how behavioral finance can help families avoid the “fairness trap” and strengthen relationships through a thoughtful estate plan.
