How thoughtful financial planning can help you move beyond the numbers and focus on what matters most.

What does it mean to live a Rich Life? Most of us probably think about financial wealth, and that’s certainly part of it. But living a Rich Life involves much more than reaching a certain number in our bank or investment accounts. It’s about what truly lights us up and gets us out of bed each morning.

What Is Rich Life Planning?

Rich Life Planning is about looking beyond the numbers and understanding what wealth makes possible in your life. It connects your financial decisions with your personal values, relationships, experiences, and the goals that matter most to you.

One approach I bring to my work with clients is Rich Life Planning, a process that helps connect financial decisions with the life someone wants to live.

Drawing on three questions developed by the Kinder Institute of Life Planning®, I invite clients to pause and reflect on what truly excites them. The questions are simple, but the conversations that follow can be surprisingly meaningful. Sometimes clients discover priorities or aspirations they haven’t given themselves much time to consider.

For couples, the experience can be especially valuable. Even after many years together, partners sometimes learn something new about each other’s hopes and wishes.

How Can Financial Planning Support the Life You Want?

One couple I worked with had raised their children, paid for college, and helped them purchase their first homes. Now they were ready to focus a little more on themselves.

The husband loved racing his Porsche around the track and wanted to upgrade his car. He also wanted to maintain his physical and mental health so he could continue enjoying this passion for years to come.

His wife also wanted to stay healthy so they could travel together and enjoy time with their grandchildren. But she had another wish. She wanted to walk into a boutique, find the perfect outfit, and buy it without looking at the price tag.

As we talked through their wishes, we identified a few ways to make their financial plan more closely reflect what they wanted from this next chapter. We incorporated the car upgrade and additional travel into their plan and discussed how they wanted to prioritize their health.

The boutique purchase was a little different. They already knew they could comfortably afford it. For her, the next step wasn’t a financial decision. It was deciding to enjoy something she wanted without second-guessing the cost.

A Rich Life Looks Different for Everyone

What I appreciate about Rich Life Planning is that it creates space for conversations like these. It’s not always about making dramatic changes or pursuing extraordinary goals. Sometimes it’s about recognizing what’s already possible and being more intentional about enjoying it.

Ultimately, a rich life looks different for everyone. My goal is to understand what that means to each client and help them make financial decisions that support the life they want to live.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rich Life Planning

What is the difference between Rich Life Planning and traditional financial planning?

Traditional financial planning often focuses on investments, retirement income, taxes, and long-term financial goals. Rich Life Planning adds a more personal dimension by exploring what you want your wealth to make possible. The goal is to connect your financial resources with the experiences, relationships, and priorities that bring meaning to your life.

How can couples plan for a rich life together?

Couples can begin by having open conversations about what matters most to each person. Even partners who have spent decades together may have different aspirations or goals they haven’t fully discussed. Rich Life Planning creates an opportunity to explore those wishes and consider how their financial plan can support both individual and shared priorities.

How can a financial advisor help me live a more fulfilling life?

A financial advisor can help you understand how your financial resources align with the life you want to live. Beyond managing investments and planning for retirement, comprehensive wealth planning can help you evaluate important decisions, prioritize meaningful goals, and feel more confident about using your wealth to support the things that matter most.

How does your psychology of wealth influence your financial decisions?

Your relationship with money is shaped by your experiences, values, and beliefs, often in ways you may not realize. Understanding your psychology of wealth can help you recognize what drives your financial decisions, what brings you a sense of security, and what living a rich life truly means to you. At Mission Wealth, we encourage clients to explore these connections as part of a more personalized approach to financial planning.
