This month’s Spotlight on the Team interview is with Client Service Representative Alex Xiques, who is based out of our Santa Barbara location. Since joining Mission Wealth two years ago, she has worked closely with her team of Client Advisors to prepare new account paperwork and perform ongoing account maintenance for clients. In this interview, Alex spoke about how much she enjoys being able to build not only professional relationships with our clients but friendships, her love for yoga, and what a day of work looks like for her in the Santa Barbara office.
What childhood experiences have you had that formed who you are today?
Although I grew up in Santa Barbara, my dad was born in Cuba so we spent many of my childhood summers at my grandmother’s house in Miami with my dad’s side of the family. I remember hearing their stories about Cuba and what life was like as Castro began to take power. When they fled Cuba in 1962, they had to leave everything they owned behind.
Later, once my dad graduated high school, he left Miami and moved to Santa Barbara and eventually started his own architectural business. I think growing up with this perspective helped me see how important it is to work hard and be the best version of yourself possible, no matter what the circumstances.
How do you like to spend time outside of Mission Wealth?
I spend most of my time outside of work either at the beach, hiking, paddle boarding or practicing yoga.
Do you have any pets?
I have a 14 year old Chihuahua named Penny. My parents got her for me when I was in sixth grade as a graduation present but unfortunately she only ever really bonded with my mom. She used to be really feisty and would try to bite but now that she is getting older and is losing her eyesight, she is getting really sweet. Just a few weeks ago, I picked her up from my parents’ house and took her to the beach with me and we had a great time. Progress!
What’s something interesting that people don’t know about you?
Growing up, I was a competitive gymnast. When I was really little, I had a lot of energy and I used to do backflips off of my parents bed. One night, I landed wrong and my parents decided it was time to get me into gymnastics. I started at the Santa Barbara Gymnastics Club when I was three years old and I loved it! Eventually I began traveling throughout California to compete with my team. When I was 14, I decided to stop competing and I joined the cheer team at my high school and then I found yoga in 2008 and have been practicing ever since!
At Mission Wealth we talk to people all the time about what their goals and aspirations are. So what’s on your bucket list?
I actually have a long list of places that I want to go. Since I still have a lot of family in Cuba, it’s a big goal of mine to go there and reconnect with my cousins and other family members. I also want to spend some time in Southeast Asia.
What do you think makes you well-suited for your current role? Is there something about your personality that guides your approach?
As a Client Service Representative, I am constantly corresponding with clients either on the phone, through email or in person. I think my outgoing personality helps me communicate with our clients and help them feel at ease. I genuinely enjoy having conversations and learning about our client’s goals, which makes them feel heard and appreciated.
What does a day of work look like to you?
I live fairly close to the office, so most mornings I walk to work. It only takes about 10 minutes but it’s a really great way to start the day. I definitely have a routine when I come into the office but each day is different. I work closely with our advisors in our San Francisco, Marina Del Rey and Westlake Village offices preparing new account paperwork, processing deposits and withdrawals and providing ongoing account maintenance for our clients in those areas.
What are your favorite kinds of clients to work with and why?
We are very lucky because we have so many great clients! But I’d have to say my favorites are the ones who trust us and are grateful for the peace of mind that we help them achieve. Santa Barbara is so small and I always end up running into clients around town and having great conversations. It’s so nice being able to build not only professional relationships with our clients but friendships as well. Also, it’s really sweet when our clients stop by the office just to say hi or bring us treats!
